BTO Office Panel: Biology for Security – Warfighter Readiness and Resiliency

This BTO technical session highlights breakthroughs in genomics and molecular biology to accelerate warfighter readiness and biosecurity. COL Matt Hepburn will describe BTO’s pursuit of novel outbreak detection and gene-encoded therapies to enable more rapid medical countermeasures against infectious diseases. Dr. Eric Van Gieson will present his vision for using an individual’s epigenome to determine that person’s history of exposure to weapons of mass destruction. Dr. Renee Wegrzyn will present her vision for using programmable gene modulation to bolster natural host defenses to provide protection against chemical, biological and radiological threats. Dr. Tristan McClure-Begley will discuss methods he is exploring to extend the time for lifesaving medical treatment by developing novel molecular interventions to slow or pause the functions of living cells and preserve their viability, and then safely reverse the intervention.
